Showing posts with label sorority
I've wanted to write this post for a very long time but the moment never felt right. I started this blog in 2012 when I was going into my junior year of college. At that point, I had been in my sorority for almost a year and had big dreams of what I was going to accomplish in the sisterhood.

Ask anyone who knew me in college and they'll tell you I was very passionate about my sorority. I craved the friendship, the leadership, and the message that came along with being part of Phi Sigma Sigma, of being part of something huge.

When I was a junior, I had already won the position of Vice President of Communication on the Greek Board for the entire school, I was in charge of a committee or two and was on the road to do something bigger.

I knew I wanted to run for the Executive Board, it was just a matter of whether I was going to choose the president or vice president position. I wanted to be in charge, I wanted to make my sorority better. I was the girl on campus who made everyone go to the events, who wore her letters so much my friends had to tell me to wear normal clothes, and who wanted to be part of everything that the sorority did.

Eventually, that junior year, I ran and won for Vice President (unopposed but mostly because everyone knew how badly I wanted the position and how good I would make it) and for once, felt really at home.

I always had a pretty clear vision of who I was in my life, I was a little quirky, a little shy, and someone who was never the leader of the group. I was laid back in a sense that I just followed what others did or wanted to do -- if I really didn't want to do it, I didn't.

Being the Vice President of the sorority, standing in front of over 100 girls at my first meeting was nerve-wracking. I wasn't the girl who felt comfortable speaking in front of people, I didn't know what I was doing; while there was a handbook for the VP position, no one before me took it as seriously as I was going to, as seriously as I wanted too. After I left the position and groomed many young girls to take my place in years to come, they told me that I changed the way the VP operated and the position in the chapter. That was my legacy.

I loved Greek life so much I convinced the Greek advisor to let me on two executive boards at once and held the position of Vice President of Communication for my senior year as well. I loved Greek life so much and felt so at home that I won Sorority Woman of the Year in my senior year. I was fraternity sweetheart and really (not to pat myself on the back) a big lady on campus.

I felt at home in my sorority so much, like I had finally found myself and my place. I had never dreamed that I would have the skills to run an entire sorority, which is basically a little town of young women. I grew up in my sorority and learned so many skills that I've taken with me into my adult life, even five years after I graduated.

If you're in a sorority, or if you're thinking about rushing, these are a few lessons you might learn during your years and be able to take with you forever.

Leadership

I was never a leader before the sorority. As I said before, I went the flow and followed the rules. It was very weird for me to actually 'make' the rules. Being a leader I learned that it's important to listen to people, take constructive criticism, and work together. Just because you are in charge doesn't mean you get to lead alone... you need help. I learned to take charge of situations I knew I could handle but also delegate when it was important. I think to go into an entry-level or even mid-level position you won't necessarily be a leader but having those leadership skills and quality will help greatly in doing a good job and setting yourself up for success.

Work Ethic and Responsibility

It might sound really silly but being on the Executive Board, or just being a member of a sorority will take a lot of work. There is a lot to do in a sorority; weekly meetings, events, mixers, conferences, recruitment... it takes a lot of responsibility to manage your time, plan events, and just help out with everything that it takes to make a sorority go round. I was never busier than I was in college and it really taught me time management, how to say no (sometimes there is just too much going on) and how to work hard to make something happen.

Small Talk

I am an incredibly shy person. I really do not like talking to people and I would much rather stay at home than be out. I'm not good at making friends and it takes a lot for me to feel comfortable in a social setting. However, in a sorority, from the first day of recruitment to your last day of college, you are kind of forced to be social. When you're getting ready to join a sorority you go through the recruitment process where you have to make a lasting impression on the sisters in order to get a bid. Selling yourself and stepping outside your comfort zone is essential and it can be quite the process for some people. Because of the small talk, I had to make, the public speaking I had to do, I feel a little more comfortable in my own skin. Without the sorority, I would still be the shy person I used to be. *I definitely am still a little shy but it is not as bad as it was. This helped me greatly with interview skills, conferences, and networking events.

Teamwork

No matter where you go in life there is going to be someone you dislike or don't get along with. No matter where you go in life, you will have to work with someone you don't like. A sorority is the perfect place to start honing in on this skill. Now listen, sororities have a reputation of being a catty group of women but that was so far from the truth in my experience. No one fought or were vicious to each other, but not everyone was best friends. However, we did all come together when it mattered and we all worked together to better the sorority and be the best we could be. Even if someone wasn't your BFF, you respected them because they were your sister and you were able to get things done. That is so important in life, to learn to work with people you don't necessarily want to work with and I'm so thankful for that lesson.

Whenever I have dealt with difficult situations, I try to remind myself that once I was a girl who was responsible for a hell of a lot more than I am right now and I got through that and did a great job.

All in all, this quote sums up how a sorority can help you become who you are and help you so much in life.

If you were in a sorority, what were some of the lessons you learned?

This weekend I took a trip back to my college town and just like all the other trips before, since I graduated in 2014, it felt like no time has passed.

My sorority hosted an alumnae brunch so I got to see my friends as well as meet some of the younger, new girls in the sorority. It was so great being in our local bar, surrounded by different generations of Phi Sigma Sigma ladies. Seeing the sorority grow yet remain the same is so cool and so weird.

I pledged my sorority back in 2011, as a college sophomore. I didn't have the greatest freshmen year and was rejected from the sororities in the spring semester. I was counting on a bid from one of the organizations on campus because I had such a tough time making friends. When that wasn't the case, I considered transferring.

I didn't want to be at college without a sorority, I felt like that made the college experience; I'm not saying you CAN'T be at college without Greek life because you 100% can. I have a lot of friends who enjoyed their college experience to the highest degree and weren't part of Greek life. However, looking back now, I am so glad I stayed at Iona and went out for recruitment again in the Fall.

I got a bid to all the sororities I was rejected from; oh what a difference a few months can make. At Iona and at a lot of other small schools, it's easier to get a bid in the Fall semester because the freshmen aren't allowed to rush, so it's a smaller group of girls. Standing out amongst 40 is a lot easier than 100.

What happened next changed my life. I was part of this huge organization who held such a standard on campus. Within my sorority I started to take leadership roles and I said that I could see myself being on the executive board some day.

Socially, I had 50 girls on campus that I was able to have lunch with, go out with, and hang out with whenever I wanted. I had a pledge class of 4 girls who I loved with all my heart, and a big sister who I looked up to so much. My social life had changed drastically and it felt good to have a place of belonging.

Throughout my life I always had big groups of friends. In elementary school, I was super close with my entire class and then in high school, I had a group of 10-15 girls who I called my best friends. I went to an all girls' high school and being surrounded by all those girls all the time really made me feel confident and right at home.

That's why I had such a hard time in college. It was weird not having a set group of friends immediately, but that's what Phi Sigma Sigma gave me.

It may sound weird but I really cared and loved all the girls in my sorority. Did we have drama? Sure we did but not as much as you'd think. If anything, the drama was over our sorority budget or where to have formal. It was never anything that ended friendships or threatened the sisterhood.

Eventually, I became Vice President of the sorority and that changed everything. People respected me and I had power. That sounds horrible, but I mean it in the best way possible. I made changes in the sorority and people, till this day, look up to me for it.

I gained leadership skills, I was able to speak and hold my own in front of a room of 70+ young women who had very different opinions on everything and made it known. I was able to be helpful and problem solve. I planned events and dealt with our advisors. My leadership in my sorority, and in school because I was on our Greek Council Board as well, helped me in ways I still don't think I realize.

I always thought I could be a leader but didn't know until it was happening how much I was fit for a position like this. I loved it so much I'm an advisor for my sorority at a different chapter at a different school.

When I graduated, I was really depressed. My anxiety came back and I missed my friends. It was really hard on me and even now, I still get sad thinking about how I'll never have what I once did. Senior year of college was truly the best year of my life and I look back at it so fondly.

Weekends like this weekend, when I go back and don't know everyone in the room but somehow they know me and I feel a connection with them, that's what my sorority always meant to me. It was forming a bond with all these girls who joined for the same reasons I did and even though I just met them, we have this connection and it's something really special.

Walking down the street with my best friends, and seeing my college campus across the street, nothing has ever really changed. I'm the same girl all those years ago, I just have a full time job and different responsibilities.

Do I wish I could go to a fraternity party every weekend, sit in class and wake up at noon? Of course I do. I'd give anything to go back to my college days because weekends like this remind me of all I've left behind.

The good thing is, it'll always be my home and no matter how much time passes, it's still so incredibly special to me.

Well this is late and I realized I missed a 'Links' post last week #bloggerfail.

This was an exceptionally good week for me. I mostly worked from home, thankfully because the cold here in NYC should be illegal. I've never felt a chill much like -9 degrees and I hope no one else has to experience this.

I made a trip up to campus this week for Big/Little night and it was like I hit my refresh button. Big/Little is my favorite night of the year and I'd say most sorority girls agree with me. There's something so innocent and special about a new member turning around and seeing her big sister. I get the chills and cry every.single.time.

This was extra special because I finally became a GREAT Grandbig...so yeah I'm really old but she's a precious little nugget and I'm so excited for my entire sorority.

A little brunette family tree loving :)

Being up at school with my sorority sisters and my best friends, I have never felt more like myself. I've been in such a rut lately and being there, seeing everyone, it was just the best medicine. I came home feeling refreshed and happier (and a little more tired #postgrad) but it was wonderful.

I'm in for a fun yet relaxing weekend of dinner and drinks with my girlfriends, resting, and blogging...and then the Oscars on Sunday so it'll be good.

Here's what I was loving this week (and a little from last week):

A very interesting and incredible write up about some of my favorite bloggers and the blogging industry!

I'm a semi morning person and I find these all to be true.

The 2:30pm feeling is alive and real, I promise you.

I always have serious FOMO about fashion week and this helped me feel a bit better about it.

Dark chocolate vs. milk chocolate....I'm a dark chocolate kind of gal.

I could get on board with these February drugstore buys!

What'd you love this week?

This is a sponsored post but all opinions are my own

When I was in college, I loved spending money I didn't have on new letters. Tank tops, sweatshirts, t shirts, sweatpants but then also mugs, pencils, stickers....everything was Phi Sigma Sigma for me.

There was one week at the end of college where I wore letters for two weeks straight...without repeating a single item. My friends were ready to kill me and kept telling me to "STOP WEARING LETTERS" but hey, I had to get it all in before it was not socially acceptable anymore.

Well, jokes on everyone else because I have a huge drawer filled with sorority apparel and I'm wearing my most comfortable lettered sweatpants as I write this.

Since I graduated, I haven't purchased a single sorority item (with the exception of my homecoming shirt) and I command myself because I didn't think I'd be able too.

Just because I haven't purchased anything doesn't mean I don't LOVE finding new websites that have sorority products.

Well, I recently discovered a great one that I knew needed to be shared.

GoneGreek contacted me about their website and I was immediately overwhelmed by the incredible amount of products, both greek and non-Greek they have. The ability to customize any of the items is awesome and it's just so cool.

There truly is something for everyone at GoneGreek.

The prices are right too...they run around the same as other greek websites out there but they have SO much more than any site I've ever seen.

Aside from the Greek products, you can add a monogram to anything. I think that is the beauty of this site and what makes it so special. You don't have to be Greek to be able to enjoy it!

You know fashion blogging isn't my expertise...excuse the mirror pictures!
GoneGreek was kind enough to allow me to pick out a product for review and instead of choosing a sorority item, since I'm a post grad and have enough, I chose the monogrammed crewneck sweatshirt. I've always wanted a sweatshirt with my monogram on it so I thought this was a great time to do so!

I received the shirt within a week (excellent shipment time with the snow NYC experienced) and it's the softest sweatshirt ever. It's so comfortable and true to size. It's definitely well made...you could tell the moment you take the shirt out of the packaging.

I may have not gotten a sorority shirt but I obviously had to honor Phi Sigma Sigma and get a navy blue sweatshirt with gold writing ;)

GoneGreek was ALSO kind enough to host a giveaway for one lucky reader who will win their own monogrammed crewneck sweatshirt :) I thought this would be better because I know I have some readers who aren't part of greek life!

The giveaway will run for one week so get those entries in :)

It seems that every other week is a good one for me; it's as if I can't be in a good, positive mood for more than a few days in a row #SOS.

It's Friday afternoon as I type this up (sorry it's so late) and I'm pretty sure I'm getting sick so that's fun. Also, my underclassmen friends will be returning to campus this week so my life is pretty much over. This is so unfair, I didn't want to graduate.

Anyways, enough with my positive vibes, I know it's becoming too much for you all to handle!

Here's what I was loving on the internet this week :)

Enjoy your last pre-Labor Day weekend!

I blogged a few weeks ago about the relaunch of the amazing Little Problems and since then, they've been all over social media with updates on their latest products, an application to be a Campus Rep and lots o' giveaways.

Well now, one lucky Royally Pink reader will be able to win their own swag from Little Problems to either keep for themselves or give to that special sorority gal in your life.

Little Problems is giving away one of their brand new "Like Big, Like Little" Koozies. Just enter the Rafflecopter below :)

Little Problems was the first company I ever featured on my blog so I'll always have a special place in my heart for the sorority girl run company.

Lauren is such a gem and such a business woman, I'm always impressed with her work so when an email from Ms. Lauren popped up in my inbox this week, my ears immediately perked up.

Little Problems recently relaunched this week with a brand new design, logo and some new products for the sorority girl in your life.

If you don't know, Little Problems is a company that sells accessories for your Big or Little with cute little slogans and sayings. The story of Little Problems is simple: it started off as a Twitter account, using the hastag #littleproblems with "problems" relating to being a sorority Little sister.

It soon developed into a webstore and now it's a sorority phenomenon. The ladies of Little Problems are well educated, well respected and have a work ethic like no other. They're passionate about what they do and it shows through their work. I'm obsessed!

This time around, Little Problems has new products such as new koozie designs, stadium cups, and even sunglasses. They're perfect for your big or little, they'll be sure to adore them!

If you haven't checked out Little Problems, be sure to do so now!

For the past year or so, me and my sorority sisters have seen on Pinterest that the graduating class of sororities always do a fun photo-shoot.

Being the classic ladies we are, we thought this would be such a fun, different idea. No one on our campus had ever done anything like this before and we're such a close grade that we thought it'd be the perfect addition to our graduation celebrations.

My fabulous sorority sister Emma is an insanely talented photographer so we recruited her to take our pictures. The weather wasn't great leading up to the photo-shoot so we had to cancel a few times but even in the cloudy, rainy weather, the pictures came out wonderfully.

Here are some of my favorites.

My favorite :)

Also, I forgot to post this but here is my nicely decorated graduation cap!

It's less than a week till graduation and I am feeling completely emotional, nostalgic, and scared. I am terrified; I don't think I've ever been this scared in my entire life. I have no idea what is coming next nor do I have a plan.

For the first time in my life, I am winging it. Being a total Type A who has written "Make a List" on her To Do List, not knowing what is coming next makes me feel like I'm drowning.

I feel like I'm standing on the edge of a cliff and I don't know when or how to jump. I'm having my mid life crisis at the age of 21 and I just want this sickening feeling to end.

I have out grown college, I could tell you that but I don't feel nearly ready enough to make the leap into the real world. In my head I am not an adult, I am still a baby, a child who needs her safety net. There is no safety net where I'm going.

I don't feel mature enough to get a real job, put on a blazer and head out into Manhattan or wherever my big girl job takes me. I don't even have a job...and that's scary enough in itself.

I've always been fine with change but I think that's because in every situation, I knew what was coming next. When I graduated eight grade, I was going to high school. When I graduated high school, college was on the horizon. There was always something in the cards, something laid out for me after each big change. Each transition in my life has been followed by another chapter and even though those chapters were unknown, I was able to guess what was coming next.

Now, my life is completely unplanned. There is no plan--literally anything could happen and that is the most terrifying thought of all.

My heart is broken into a million pieces and I cry everyday over the fact that I'll be leaving Iona College and never returning. Yes I'll come back and visit as a alumnae but it'll never be the same. This place has been my home, my little nest for the past four years. I have grown accustomed to my ways here, there is familiarity and routine. There are the same faces as I walk to class, my friends live three minutes away and you could always find someone to grab lunch with or go out with you on a Monday night.

There will be no more parties or Tuesday night chapter meetings or Sunday morning struggle bus. I must say goodbye to all of that. I must say goodbye to classes with my sisters, nights at the bar with my guy friends, seeing my Little on campus and being so overjoyed by her smiling face.

It's so hard to explain what you're going to miss when you leave college because college is indescriable. There is no comparison; it truly is the best four years of your life.

I'm going to miss college more than anything but in my heart of hearts, I know I will keep these friends forever, this home forever; I'll always be able to come back even with the ever changing faces and scenary. It might not be the same but this is the place that changed me, made me, shaped me into who I am.

Just be prepared over the next few weeks for more nostalgic, depressing posts because my life is about to blend into something I have never known.

I found this quote on Pinterest a few months back and I gazed at it every now and again but never truly felt anything. I never felt anything because graduation didn't feel real but with 8 days ahead of us, 8 days left of my college career before I walk across the stage at Madison Square Garden, it's all real.

How lucky am I to have found something that makes saying goodbye so hard? How lucky am I to have found my friends, my family, this college? How lucky am I to have these memories to look back on and to know that I am leaving New Rochelle completely different than how I came in?

There are truly no words to describe my feelings but here's to making the next 8 days count.

I feel like in recent years, decorating your graduation cap has become a rite of passage, for girls at least. At first I only saw sorority ladies decking their caps in glitter, monograms, and their sorority letters but now, it feels like a campus wide epidemic.

If you're into crafting such as myself and you're a graduating senior, you most likely have been browsing Pinterest to find inspiration for your own design.

Since joining Phi Sig in my sophomore year, I've watched two classes of seniors come and go. I've watched them become emotional, drink heavily, and partake in senior year events. I never thought my time would come but it has.

Over the past two years I've seen some incredibly crafted graduation caps because well, we're sorority girls and crafting is in our blood. I've been thinking what my cap would look like for the past two years but never settled on a design.

With graduation only nine days away, I think it's time I figure out what my hat will look like as I cross the stage at Madison Square Garden.

Here are some of my favorites that have inspired me.

This is actually my best friend's/sorority sister's cap from last year!

If you're graduating, what is your cap going to look like?

There is nothing more I love than my sorority but I think jewelry is a close second. When you combine the two, there is an explosion of love and obsession coming from me.

I have a few pieces of jewelry barring my sorority letters and I wear them every chance I get; I have two rings and a bracelet. I love them all, I love representing my sorority in a subtle way.

I'm always looking for new brands that offer gorgeous pieces of sorority jewelry and I was so happy to find a little surprise in my inbox one day giving me just that.

The Collegiate Standard contacted me about doing a partnership/review of their website and one of their products. I was totally ecstatic about this opportunity and I'm so happy to finally be able to share it with you all.

The Collegiate Standard is an official Greek Licensed Jewelry company which is always the way to go. That means they are legally allowed to produce your letters on gorgeous pieces of jewelry. They cater to not only sororities but fraternities as well (hello lavalieres!)

All the jewelry is definitely within a college student's budget; how can you go wrong with a beautiful $20 necklace baring your letters? They offer everything from necklace lavalieres, to rings, to bracelets. And it's not just letters that the jewelry is donning but symbols as well.

For example, my beloved Phi Sigma Sigma's symbol is a pyramid and I think this is the most gorgeous necklae I've ever seen.

TCS was kind enough to send me my own beautiful necklace to love and cherish, and review for you all. It's a diamond heart pendant with my letters shining bright. The chain is a little bit small for my liking but it's still perfect.

The people at The Collegiate Standard are so wonderful that they are offering a special coupon code to Royally Pink readers so go and get your jewelry today!

I received an email a few weeks ago from the creators of GoGreek Pro, a new photo app designed especially for Greeks. It's no secret that I love and adore Greek life so I thought I'd check it out. The creators gave me a special code to get the app for free and I got straight to designing.

The app is super easy to use and it's so much fun! All you have to do is open or take a photo on the app's home screen and then there are a bunch of different options to get to customizing.

You can add your greek letters in a variety of different patterns (hello leopard print!). The fact that they have a number of different patterns for Greek letters is my favorite because then there's something for everyone; they also have stickers saying "Big Sis/Lil Sis" which is awesome for those lovely Big/Little photos.

I customized my latest fam tree photo (Guys, I'm a GrandBig now!) with my sorority letters and I love the way it came out!

Also, I decorated a picture of my Greek Council E-Board at this semester's "Meet the Greeks". This would be a great idea for recruitment because it's encouraging greek unity and to join a greek organization.

I have to say, I liked this app more than I expected too. It adds a little something extra to a plain old photo. It's better than any Instagram filter or caption because it's much more personal.

Have you ever tried a photo decorating app?

It's been a long, rough and stressful week. It went by pretty fast but the days felt like they dragged on. I'm definitely looking forward to the weekend and some down time, even though I'm going to be swamped with homework/papers/studying.

Here are some of my favorite things this week that made everything a little easier and brighter.

1. Spring Break

Punta Cana is calling my name!! In just two weeks, I'll be on a plane headed to what will be the craziest, wildest and most fun experience of my four years of college. My sorority sisters, favorite fraternity men, and myself will be taking over Punta Cana and I can't wait to see what Spring Break has in store for us!!

2. 22 Things Only Second Semester Seniors Will Understand

There's less than three months till graduation and I'm really struggling with the idea of not being in college anymore. I have an anxiety attack at least once a day and it's just not fun when people are constantly asking me what I'm doing when I graduate. This post from The Huffington Post is pretty much spot on and down right hysterical. #Don'tMakeMeLeave

3. SCANDAL IS BACK!

Maybe the week went by so fast because I knew Olivia Pope was going to return to my TV screen on Thursday at 10pm. As I write this post, I haven't seen the episode yet by my goodness, I'm sure it'll make my week 100x better than it already was. To tide me over, I took this Buzzfeed quiz on which Scandal character I am. I got Mellie Grant and couldn't be happier! #FLOTUS

PS: Check out this hilarious video montage of Olivia Pope and her love of red wine:

4. TSM Columns

I've been huge on columns and articles this week and TSM has been killing it. Since they opened their new website, the columns they've been posting so many columns ranging in so many different topics. Everything seems much more relevant to sorority girls and less offensive. I've even submitted a column or two and I'm hoping they get published! I have a lot of ideas for columns so maybe you'll see me published soon!

5. Her Campus Community Moderators and Beta Testers:

Being part of the HerCampus Blogger Network has been such an amazing experience. I've gotten so many cool opportunities and they just keep rolling in! I was selected to be a Community Moderator and Beta Tester along with some of my other fabulous HCBN ladies. I'll be moderating the blogger facebook groups and helping out HC HQ with some blogger stuff. I'm SO excited to take things to the next level!!

What have been the highlights of your week?
