Happy National Sleep Week! What a week to celebrate by talking about night routines, good sleep...and good beauty sleep. This week long holiday feels appropriate since we sprung forward this past weekend and lost an hour of sleep...but I guess that's why the powers that be made it this week.

It's no secret that for the past few years, I've been more intrigued by skincare products rather than makeup. Ever since the pandemic when the skincare boom really started, I've taken my skin more seriously and I think it's paying off.

Since quarantine started, my makeup wearing has been at an all-time low. Some days I will apply a little concealer and mascara to feel put together but most days, it's just all skin. Also, like most people, I've stepped up my skincare routine during this time. To me, my skincare routine is a form of self-care so it's natural that I would want to spend more time on it, and revamp it with better products. It also made sense to stop buying makeup and invest in skincare products, which I definitely have been doing.

My skin has been changing a bit thanks to the lovely new concern of 'maskne' aka mask induced acne so I've needed to try to find products that work to help combat blemishes. As the weather changes and gets colder, I always switch up my skincare routine because my skin gets extremely dry and flaky during the fall and winter.

All of that being said, I figured this was the perfect time to talk about my morning and nighttime skincare routine!

*It looks like the last time I did a a skincare routine post was in 2017 so it is much needed.

Morning Skincare

First,  I wash my face with either Simple Micellar Water & a Shisedo cotton pad or use the Summer Fridays Super Amino Gel cleanser. Both are extremely gentle which I appreciate in the morning. I started using an actual cleanser a few months ago because I felt like the micellar water just wasn't doing the job I needed it to do. I want my skin to feel as clean as possible without any tightness which is exactly how the Summer Fridays leaves my skin feeling.

After cleansing, I will try to apply a toner; I was using the Thayers Witch Hazel but recently made the switch to the First Aid Beauty Wild Oat Hydrating Toner to give myself an extra layer of hydration.

Once the toner is absorbed, I will apply my Tula Glow & Get It Cooling Eye Balm to moisturize, soothe and brighten my tired eyes. I go in with actual eye cream after my moisturizer...I have been using  the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream Light. I was in desperate need of a new daytime moisturizer and I wanted something very hydrating yet lightweight. It's an added bonus that it has SPF. Since I spend most of my days inside, I feel comfortable having the built in SPF and not applying a separate one.

I'll do a full review of the Magic Cream at a later date as it's still new to me but so far, I really love it. My skin feels incredibly moisturized all day long, without leaving a greasy residue behind.

After my skin is moisturized, I try to remember to apply my eye cream, either the Boscia Indigo Eye Cream or Belf Moisturizing Eye Bomb . Both are hydrating, cooling, and feel very nice on the skin.

Once all my skincare is applied, it's time to start the day!

Nighttime Routine

I start off by washing off the day with my Soap & Glory Face, Soap and Clarity Vitamin C Facial Wash. It is incredibly refreshing, invgoriarting and deeply cleanses the skin. My face never feels as good as it does after washing it with this cleanser. While it's gentle enough for daily use, it does have a nice exfoliating feel, while also purifying the skin and pulling the dirt out of your pores.

After cleansing, I apply my Fresh Rose Hydration Oil Serum. To apply I just shake a few drops into my hands and press them into my skin. This is an extremely light weight serum that sinks deeply into the skin to hydrate and plump. It also feels really refreshing and moisturizers layer great on top of it.

Once that is fully absorbed and my skin is dry to the touch, I apply my active ingredients. According to Cosmo, you should be applying retinol and active ingredients last and going forward I will but for the sake of this post I'll keep it real.

I just started using the Olay Retinol Serum and it's been working great, but now I have finally incorporated the Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos Gylcolic Night Serum into the routine. I splurged on this last minute during the Sephora VIB Sale after wanting this product forever. I can definitely feel my skin purging from

Once the active ingredients are absorbed, I go in with either two of my nighttime moisutirzers: Innis Free Orchid Youth Enriched Cream or Josie Maran Hydrating Milk. Both have different textures but are equally hydrating and leave my skin feeling great. As final touches, I add eye cream (either the Boscia Indigo or First Aid Beauty Retinol) and my Glossier Balm Dot Com.

*If I have a breakout, I apply a spot treatment, like this Pacifica one or a pimple patch... which I'm doing an entire post on later this week!

My skincare routine is very important to me, and even though some nights I am too lazy to do it all, I always try to apply retinol and/or moisturizer. I want my skin to always be hydrated during the cold weather months, and yet, still looking it's best.

What is in your skincare routine this season?

It's officially winter and my skin is acting up. I've been breaking out like crazy, there are dry patches on my skin, and I just feel like my skin has needed some TLC.

I always feel like winter is the time when you really pay attention to your skin; dry, cold air always makes people pack on the layers of moisturizers and face masks, and I almost feel like there's something truly glamorous about winter skin care.

My favorite beauty articles & blogs to read are always about transitioning from season to season. I love seeing how people switch up their routines to meet the weather conditions; I also love getting ideas of what is on trend & what I should be using.

I've done multiple skincare routine posts in the past, including my most recent post from September. Today, I want to strictly talk about the must haves for dry skin.

I don't use these products every single day, but they are my dry skin saviors.

For the record, I have normal to dry skin. In the past, it's been drier than normal but right now it's around normal to dry. I can feel when my skin is going through a dry patch and needs the extra hydration.

For reference, I use almost all of these items exclusively at night. I usually am too lazy/forget to moisturize during the day and when I do, I need something a little more lightweight. This moisturizer is still my go-to for daytime.

beauty 101-dry skin-skincare routine-skincare-dry skin products

  • First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream: I've been talking about this for two years and it's still my ride or die moisturizer. My mom started using it on her face and she loves it; I've exclusively been using it for my body, unless my skin is in freak out mode & I need some heavy duty stuff. If you haven't used this yet, please try it. You will not regret it.
  • Laura Mercier Nourishing Rose Oil: I was in search of a great oil to use and then I found this. I read some Sephora reviews and was sold. I have not looked back because it's an incredible product. It's a very luxurious product that comes in a gorgeous glass bottle & I feel super chic when I use it, but what's inside is what matters. It's a thin oil that packs a punch and really sinks into your skin. It's not greasy and makes your skin feel hydrated and really nice. I will for sure be repurchasing this every chance I get.
  • Josie Maran Argan Oil: This product has won every award possible in the beauty industry, and really has been a game changer over the past few years. To me, I think it put oils on the map and disrupted the beauty industry. However, I have not used it until this summer and it is really good. I don't use it too much, mostly because I really love my Laura Mercier oil, but it is a heavy duty oil that gets the job done. I like to use it with the next product I'm going to talk about it, and I got them together in a QVC kit.
  • Josie Maran Pure Argan Intensive Hydrating Milk: I'm kind of grossed out by beauty items with the word "milk" in the title but I'm also kind of not. This definitely takes the cake as the latter-- I am obsessed with this product and almost done with it. It's a mixture between a lotion, oil & serum, and feels really nice on the skin. My face always feels smooth & refreshed the next day, and it sinks into the skin really nicely. If my skin is acting up, I usually put this on first & finish it off with the Argan Oil. They work really great together.
  • Estee Edit Pink Peony Overnight Water Pack: The moment I saw this product, I wanted to try it but it has a pretty price tag. I bought this Estee Edit kit and a mini size came in it and I'm in love. On days that I'm a little lazy and my skin doesn't feel as if I need an oil, this is my go-to. It's my must have nighttime moisturizer because it's light weight, gives a cooling effect, and absorbs right into the skin.
As you can see, the pattern here is non greasy products that absorb quickly & leave my skin hydrated and refreshed.

Speaking of refreshed, I have two new holy grail mists. One of them I just purchased because it was on sale at Sephora & currently sold out, but you can still find it here at Ulta. The First Aid Beauty Vitamin Hydrating Mist gives the most fine mist & the most cooling effect ever. It feels so nice in the morning & right before you apply your makeup. It's a new favorite, for sure.

The last item on my list is the Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist (that is a mouthful name); I bought a travel size of this in the summer and it is incredible. It smells really awesome, and also gives a very fine mist. I like to use this almost like a toner after I wash my face and before I apply my skincare at night, and I think it works great.

Below are some other favorite picks for my dry skin savers:

What are your dry skin (or oily skin) savers?

Skincare has become more and more important to me as the months have passed. I love a good moisturizer almost as much as I love a striking highlight. Without good skin, your makeup falls flat.

Without good skincare products, what is the point of your almost $40 Becca highlighter?

Nothing... that's what!

I was never good about sticking to a select few products because I always love to try a thousand things at once. Therefore, I never had holy grail items; also, I feel like my skin changes a lot so I constantly need to cater to those changes.

I have my skin issues, definitely; the main one being dryness around my eye and on my eyelid. Nothing worked to help out with that so I have a prescription steroid cream.

Other than that, my skin is usually dry, I don't break out a lot, but I do have some texture on my cheeks. I feel like these products and ways of cleansing really help me keep my skin clear and in control.

(Here's my skincare routine from last fall and from the spring. You can see how it's changed a lot!)

Makeup Removers

  • Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil: I purchased this last Christmas and have a little more than half of the bottle left. I don't use this every night, but when I'm wearing a full, caked on face of makeup or I feel like my skin needs an extra step of cleansing, I'll use this. It's a cleansing oil so it breaks down all your makeup before cleansing; just apply a few pumps to dry skin, rub in, and rinse clean. My skin feels awesome afterwards.
  • Makeup Eraser: If I don't use the cleansing oil, this is my go to. Ever since purchasing this a few months ago, I haven't used makeup wipes to remove any makeup. This cloth is specially made to remove makeup in one quick swipe and using only water. How does it do that? I have no idea but it works! Just run it under water, wipe your face, and it's completely gone. It's seriously like magic.
  • Eye Makeup Removers: It's very rare I need another remover for my eyes but if I do, it's these two. The Clinique Take the Day Off Eye Makeup Remover Stick is such an interesting product, I knew I needed it in my life. It's a balm that you rub on your finger, and apply to your eye and all the eye makeup literally disappears. The Too Faced Mascara Melt Off Cleansing Oil is a cleansing oil for your mascara. I'll use this when I have on a waterproof mascara or just have the extra moments to remove mascara properly. It really does make all the difference in how the rest of my makeup comes off -- no raccoon eyes here!
Cleansers:
  • Tarte Frixxxtion Stick: This has been my go-to lately, and I won't go too much into it because there is an entire Beauty in Review post dedicated to this lovely little product here.
  • Mario Badescu Botanical Exfoliating Scrub: If I need a little more exfoliation, I'll grab this. I received it for free when I was at the Ulta Conference for work back in April, and I just like how it makes my skin feel. It is an exfoliator but at the same time, it has a gel consistency so it's not harsh at all. It deep cleans my pores and gets all the gunk out. My skin is super clean and fresh afterwards; it's also doesn't irritate my sensitive, dry skin which is always a plus.
Toner:
  • Fresh Rose Floral Toner: Toner is not something I remember but when I do, I grab this. It's also the only toner I have at the moment, but I have tried a few in the past and I really just love this one. It's very gentle, has a great rose scent, and gets all the excess dirt off my face. My skin feels fresh afterwards, and it doesn't sting at all (like some other toners I've tried).
Treatments

I don't use treatments very often but if I do, they're usually a variety. Whether it's a face mask, a blemish spot treatment, or an extra boost of toning and detoxing, I'll do it right after toner and before my serums and moisturizers. Below are my favorites:

Serums and Moisturizer:
  • Josie Maran Hydrating Milk: This has been giving me and my skin life lately. I purchased a Josie Maran Today's Special Value kit from QVC and this was included in it. It has a milky consistency but applies like a smooth serum, but is not as greasy as one would think a serum would be. It has intense hydrating properties and just feels incredible on the skin. I know once the winter comes, this will be even more handy.
  • Josie Maran Argan Oil: Another product that came in the kit, and one that I've been wanting to try for a while. Argan oil can be used anywhere and everywhere, but so far I've been using it in conjunction with my Hydrating Milk. I guess this is more like a moisturizer for me because I don't apply a moisturizer afterwards.
For the past few weeks, I haven't used a separate moisturizer because I feel like the Josie Maran products are more than enough hydration for me, especially because I'm using them together. When I do use a moisturizer, it's one of the below:

Eye Cream:
  • Rose Hydrating Eye Gel Cream: I've had an obsession with eye creams over the years but this one is the one I've currently been using. It's probably not my favorite ever (that would be the Tarte one, so far). It, as you can assume, has a gel consistency and you need the smallest amount for under your eyes. It definitely hydrates but I don't think it does much else to help the under-eye area.
Lips:
  • Glossier Balm Dot Com: I haven't used another lip product at night for months. This is the best lip balm to use at night (or during the day); it's super heavy because it's a skin salve, but not heavy in a bad way at all! It hydrates my lips, and in the morning, I still have a bit of residue but my lips are fresh as a daisy. I will never be without this product (I have like 3 tubes lying around!)
AM Routine:

What you just read is my nighttime routine, I probably should've said that first. My AM routine is SUPER easy... so easy it doesn't even deserve it's own post. You can take a look at the products below:

What does your skincare routine look like?

I've come to realize that my skin is very sensitive to the change of season. Every time the weather changes, my skin flares up. It also seems that with each passing season, the skincare products that worked previously no longer work for me so I need to find new products to help.

I never had problem skin when I was younger, it was in the last two years that my skin started to become troublesome and even though I hate it, I love being able to try new products to figure out what works with my skin and what doesn't.

This upcoming fall season has honestly turned my skin upside down. For the month of August, I had finally gotten my skin under control and then once the cool air hit, it was thrown for a whirlwind once again.

I was suffering from breakouts galore and these weird bumps on the side of my cheeks and along my chin. Up close and personal they look like clogged pores so I've been really trying to unclog them with exfoliating products and pore products, trying to clear things up.

After a few weeks of trying everything under the sun, I finally started to see a clear up last week. I'm pretty sure it's thanks to one special little product I received in my Birchbox this month and it truly is my saving grace. I've already looked at the full size and will most likely be purchasing in the future.

That product is the Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream which is supposed to help repair damaged skin and hydrate your skin as well. It's a lifesaver and I'm obsessed with it. It cleared up my skin within a few days and I'm hoping my skin continues to respond well to it.

Now for the rest of my routine...

1. Simple Micellear Water & Simple Smoothing Face Scrub: I love the Simple brand. Ever since I was told last year that I was allergic to fragrance, I haven't really used another drugstore brand for my skin. Every product I've used has been amazing and these two are my favorite. I use the Micellear water in the morning on a cotton round to cleanse my face and it leaves my skin feeling refreshed and cleaned. The Smoothing Scrub is something new to me and I've fallen in love. It's a gentle exfoliate that is nice to use whether in the morning or at night. It really feels like I'm getting the dead skin off my face and I think it's made all the difference. It also doesn't irritate my skin which is the most important part.

2. Clarisonic + Fresh Soy Cleanser: I've told the tales of my love affair with my Clarisonic and it hasn't changed. This is my go to when my skin needs a deep cleaning and I try to use this after heavy make-up days or every other day. I use it in conjunction with my Fresh Soy Cleanser and it really gets the job done. My skin is incredibly soft, silky, and smooth after cleaning with my Clarisonic and I cannot imagine my life or skincare routine without it. I only use it at night because that's when I feel like my skin needs the most TLC.

3. Chemical Peel: I have come to loving a good chemical peel that removes the dead skin from your face. Just rubbing a bit of the peel onto clean skin and gently massaging it into your face allows for your dead skin to be removed, unclog pores, and refresh your skin. My two favorites are the Boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel and the Real Chemistry Luminous 3 Minute Peel.

4. Michael Todd Serum & Toner: I've used a few Michael Todd products in the past and I throughly enjoyed them at the time, so I'm happy to have two other great products in my routine. I've really been wanting to get into toners and serums because beauty experts say they are necessities and these two haven't disappointed me yet. The Organic Lemon toner is an exfoliate toner (can you tell I like exfoliates?) and it removes the dead skin and dirt that my makeup remover and cleanser missed. The Concentrated Antioxidant Moisturizing Serum is even newer since I received it in my EveryDay Glamour Birchbox LE Box and it's replaced my heavy duty moisturizer. It leaves my skin hydrated and smooth while still feeling like it's repairing my skin.

5. Tarte Eye Brightener: I've talked about this product in the past and I just bought the full size. I always need an eye cream and I'm glad to have this bad boy back in my arsenal. It hydrates the under eye area as well as providing brightening properties to improve the appearance of dark circles.

It seems like a lot of products but it takes a village to clear up my skin. It's very dry, dehydrated, and sensitive so I need a lot of help to maintain it. I love products that help brighten my skin, clear up my blemishes, and tighten my pores.

What are your favorite skincare products to help your type of skin? Give me recommendations in the comments :)

I've never had skin issues before. My face and body have always been free of acne, completely moisturized, never too dry.... I couldn't ask for better skin.

That is, until this winter.

For some reason, my skin freaked out on me and I think it's because I was home in Queens for the entire winter, for the first time in four years. I say that because when I would come home from school over Christmas break, I'd notice a change in my skin and in my hair. The water just wasn't the same as it is in Westchester.

I also have been commuting to and from Manhattan a few times a week so being in a gross, disgusting subway system for two-three hours a day doesn't help.

I may not know the exact reason but I do know that my skin reacted very badly to the dry, winter air.

I complained a bit about my under eyes being puffy, itchy, and dry and finally I went to the dermatologist and part of that ended up being an allergy to FRAGRANCE. You have no idea how upset I am that I can no longer wear perfume.

It may have been an allergy but I do know that some of it was eczema or extremely dry skin.

It wasn't just under my eyes that was suffering, it was my cheeks and my chin and my entire body. In the few weeks that I was dealing with these dry skin issues, I of course, being the product junkie I am, did my research and found some kick-butt products that helped me and my skin come back to life.

//First Aid Beauty: I had seen this brand everywhere for months before I finally bought something. I knew it was perfect for sensitive, dry, eczema prone skin. Sephora had two items on clearance that I thought would be great for me. I purchased the "Dual Repair Eye Cream" and the "Ultra Repair Lip Therapy" and they both worked wonders. When I didn't know my eyes were reacting to an allergy, the cream cleared it up in two days. I was amazed. The lip therapy is a Vaseline like texture and leaves my lips moisturized but without heavy feeling. I need more from this brand, ASAP.

//Simple Nourishing 24 Hour Day/Night Cream: I wasn't moisturizing my skin at night and I knew it was taking a toll. I needed a good nighttime moisturizer that wouldn't leave my skin feeling tight or greasy. I knew immediately that Simple was the way to go. It's made for sensitive skin and this is an air light moisturizer that can be used during the day or at night, so really, there's nothing better.

//Evian Facial Mist: I did a whole post on this weeks back but it's such an essential, I know I'm going to need to purchase another one soon. Whenever my face feels itchy or dry, I spray some of this (over or under makeup) and it instantly hydrates my skin.

//Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream: Aveeno is one of my favorite skincare brands (even though I don't own a lot of their products) so when I knew I had a problem, I looked toward Aveeno. I bought this particular cream and it's a more gel like consistency than I expected but it works incredibly. It has a cooling effect and just instantly moisturizes your skin, leaving you hydrated and smooth. I use this on eczema spots but also when my skin feels itchy and dry. It fixes the problem immediately.

//Deramest Eczema Medicated Lotion: This was the first thing I bought besides the Aveeno lotion and it continues to work like a charm. It has that dermatologist like packaging so I figured it'd work (stupid reason but I was right). It clears up any dry patches I have, on my face or body, over night. It's truly like magic.

//Clarisonic: I mentioned this in my December Favorites and it continues to be a huge asset to my skincare routine. It removes all the dead skin cells, leaving a super smooth canvas for my moisturizer. Let me know if you'd like to see a full review post on this bad boy!

//Cetaphil Cleanser and Moisturizer: I use both of these products in the morning because they're super gentle and are simple. The moisturizer has SPF which is great and leaves my skin totally hydrated for my makeup. The cleanser is a basic cleanser that does just that, cleanses. It's better to use a basic cleanser in the morning and leave the fancy stuff for nighttime.

Do you have any holy grail dry skin items that help battle eczema, psoriasis  or basic dry skin? Please let me know in the comments!!

Since I've been home and started working, my skin has been really weird. I never had breakouts, blackheads, or whiteheads, until now.

My skin has always remained perfect, with the exception of some stress/hormonal breakouts and my under eye circles. Now I have a large amount of whiteheads all along my chin and cheeks. It's gross.

It's been a problem for a few weeks now and nothing was helping. I switched up my skincare routine a few times and finally found something that is helping bring my skin back to life.

Before we get started, I must say that I was utterly confused on where to begin. I didn't understand the order of applying products nor did I know what products I should be using.

After a little research, I have my routine down pat and wanted to share it here.

In the morning, I keep it simple. I was with a gentle cleanser, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, apply my Clean and Clear Gel Moisturizer and Olay Total Effects Eye Awakening Cream.

A more intricate night skincare routine is hard to get used too. The Type-A in me, of course, wrote out my routine and followed it a few nights until I remembered exactly what had to be done and when.

Let's get into it, shall we?

Night Skincare Routine

1. Remove makeup: I remove my makeup with makeup wipes. I love this as opposed to greasy eye makeup remover pads or cold cream. It's much easier and doesn't take a lot of cleanup--I also feel that it gets more makeup off. For this, I love using CVS brand, Clean and Clear Night Relaxing Cleansing Wipes, or Simple Cleansing Wipes.

2. Cleanse/Exfoliate: Everyone says that you should exfoliate 2-3 times a week but I definitely don't follow that. I exfoliate my skin gently, every day, and then 3 times a week, I use a non gentle exfoliate. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and deep cleans your pores which is exactly what I need in my skincare routine.

My gentle exfoliate is my Sibu Beauty All Natural Balancing Facial Cleanser. It makes my skin soft and smooth.

The less gentle exfoliate isn't too harsh but I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub. I've been using this for years and it keeps my skin clear, smooth, and fresh. It also smells fantastic so I love it!

3. Tone: I don't tone my skin everyday but when I do, it gives an added freshness. For this I use Proactive Toner Treatment. It's what I have in the house and it does the job!

4. Treatments: It's important to put treatments on before any moisturizer or other night cream. This allows your skin to absorb the treatment and put it to work. The treatments I use are my Even Glow Serum by Valentina Skincare(Post on this later on), my Whish Correcting Gel, and the holy grail, the whole point of this post, Benzoyl Peroxide Gel.

As I stated previously, I had really bad whiteheads and small bumps all over my cheeks and chin. It was so bad my mom told me to go to the dermatologist but before I did that, I wanted to do my research and find a product that could work, because I knew there was something out there.

I've been using this cream for two weeks and my whiteheads/bumps are virtually all gone. I apply it once or twice a day(twice if I'm staying home sans makeup)  and it's incredible. I have to say though, it dries our your skin dramatically. I don't have dry skin at all and my face has been sort of a mess but it's worth it to get rid of those annoying bumps!

5. Moisturizer: I haven't found a great night cream that I love yet so I haven't been moisturizing at night as much. When I do, I use Cetaphil Daily Moisturizer. (It's supposed to be for daytime so I don't use it too much).

6. EyeCream: I'm in desperate need of a new eye cream because my Estee Lauder one is long gone. I've been looking at Benefit's It's Potent and Shea Terra Organics Argan and Green Coffee Around Eye Serum. Anything to clear up my dark circles and puffiness in the morning is fine by me!
