Showing posts with label founders day

On this day, in 1913, 10 incredible women got together at Hunter College in New York City and decided that it was time for a change. There were no fraternal organizations on campus that were open to women of all religions and they felt that one was needed.

That fraternal organization came in the form of Phi Sigma Sigma Fraternity. Our 10 founding sisters became the first non sectarian sorority which means that any woman of any religion was allowed to freely join.

Today we celebrate that incredible journey, this incredible sisterhood, 100 years later.

A lot of you may not care about my life as a sorority girl but it's something that has changed my life and it's who I am.

Our sisterhood as changed drastically over the past 100 years and I have never been prouder to call myself a lady of Phi Sigma Sigma.

I would not be who I am without the 10 founding sisters. I don't think they knew what they were doing 100 years ago but I think they would be proud of us today. I think that the original 10 would be so incredibly shocked and in awe of how their little sorority has grown.

I will not rattle off my emotions and my thoughts about my sorority because I have done that enough times in the past. I just want to take a moment to celebrate the past 100 years. It is an incredible time to be a Phi Sig and I have never been more grateful to a group of 10 women.

Without them I would not have been the woman I am today. I would not have the confidence and strength that I do; I would not have the relationships and memories that I do; I would not have the skills and qualities that make me a leader. Without them, I would have nothing.

So thank you to Lillian Gordon Alpern, Josephine Ellison Breakstone, Fay Chertkoff, Estelle Melnick Cole, Jeanette Lipka Furst, Ethel Gordon Kraus, Shirley Cohen Laufer, Claire Wunder McArdle, Rose Sher Seidman, and Gwen Zaliels Snyder. Thank you for giving me the best experience of my life and for believing that Phi Sigma Sigma could achieve greatness...because we have.

Happy 100 years ladies, here's to another 100!

Once a Phi Sigma Sigma, Always a Phi Sigma Sigma!

This past weekend, my beloved sorority held their Convention in Manhattan. Convention is an annual event that all the Archons of all the chapters of Phi Sigma Sigma attend to learn more about their roles, vote on Constitutional amendments, and elect new Supreme Councils.

This year, Convention was extra special because it was combined with HUGE Centennial celebrations because Phi Sigma Sigma will be celebrating their 100th anniversary on November 26th.

We've existed since 1913 and to be a sister during this time is extremely exciting.

The entire weekend was filled with exciting celebrations all around Manhattan for sisters to attend; a lot of the events were pretty pricey so I couldn't attend them. There was one special event that was relatively cheap so I registered, ready to celebrate my sorority!

Walk.Dance.Run was a 5K held on Roosevelt Island, NY to honor the passing of past Grand Archon, Josette George Kauffman. The entire day was held in Josette's honor and helped us celebrate the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation and helped ring in our new national philanthropy.

I attended the 5K with one of my sisters and we were really excited to be surrounded by other sisters from all over! It was also a gorgeous waterside view of Manhattan that the 5K took place along which was pretty relaxing and gorgeous

I've also always wanted to participate in a 5k and even though I didn't run the 5K(I can't run to save my life), it was a great experience.

I was completely back in my element, doing something amazing for the one thing I love most in my life. It felt so good to be with sisters I didn't know I had.

The president of my chapter, along with my grand-big met us after the 5K, we participated in the Zumbathon that took place after the 5k was over.

I can't even explain how wonderful it was and it really was a perfect day; I needed this day, surrounded by my sisters. I felt like my total self.

It was also really incredible to be part of the Centennial in some way because this won't happen again for another 100 years, well after my time.

The weekend ended with a Centennial Luncheon that was held at Hunter College, our place of founding, and it was extra special to me(even if I didn't get to attend) because Caroline Ghosn, the co-founder of Levo League, was the keynote speaker at the Luncheon.

I can't wait to hear all about it when I go into interning on Monday.

I was so happy that I got to participate in Centennial and I can't wait for November 26th, to truly celebrate the 10 founding sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma and the amazing journey we have taken since 1913.
